Wondering Why Your Child Always Suffers From The Common Cold?
Your child may be suffering from allergies and, in turn, adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is one the most common reasons for children to visit an ENT doctor Adenoids and tonsils are normal lymphoid tissues that help fight infection. But when it becomes inflamed, it serves as the cause of recurrent infections.
What Are The Symptoms?
- Open mouth breathing
- Snoring
- Disturbed sleep
- Less attention in class
- Pinched nose and crowded teethChange in shape of the face
- Growth Failure- due to feeding problems
- Voice change – reduction or absence of normal resonance of nasal consonants “m,” “n,” and “ng,” and their nearby vowels.
What Happens In Case Of Delayed Treatment
Adenoid hypertrophy can block the airway and the Eustachian tube, causing fluid to build up in the ear. It’s called secretory otitis media.
- Hard of hearing – As the fluid builds up the hearing mechanism of the ear is impaired
- Ear pain
- Attention deficit / poor learning. As the child hears less, pays attention less
In due course, the fluid in the ear gets thickened and starts damaging the ear bone, causing severe hearing loss.
Important Note
The child will always be unmotivated and in poor physical and mental health, with bedwetting, and stunted development.
What Is The Treatment For Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy?
Any infection will be treated first and the hearing of the child will be assessed with audiograms( hearing tests) Endoscooic powered Adenoidectomy is an endoscopic surgical procedure to remove adenoids that are hypertrophic under complete magnified vision. This clears the airway behind the nose (nasopharynx) and helps the child breathe through the nose. It also relieves the Eustachian tube block, helps maintain ear pressure, and improves hearing. In cases where fluid has already built up in the ear, a myringotomy might be needed to drain it out.
Home Remedies To Prevent Allergies?

- Avoid pets – in case of allergy to fur
- Clean your AC filter regularly
- Use hypoallergenic bedsheets and pillow covers
